UPDATE: Private File URLs by Default!
Date: June 7, 2025
To enhance your security and control, all file URLs are now private by default.
Previously, a file's unique URL acted as a password. We've upgraded this system to provide better security. Now, all files require you to be authenticated and authorized to view them, meaning they are only visible within the UI to the user who created them.
Sharing Publicly
If you wish to share a file for backup purposes with anyone via a link, you can still do so by explicitly setting "publicURLs" in the export settings allowing you to download your data with file URLs in it.
Warning: This action cannot be undone. The file will remain accessible to anyone with the link until you delete it.
A Note on URL Security
The risk of someone guessing a file URL is astronomically low. To put it into perspective, even if someone could test one billion (10^9) UUIDs per second, it would take an estimated 84 quintillion (84 * 10^18) years to guess a specific URL. Your new private-by-default system adds a robust authentication layer on top of this already incredible security.
